How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Published on

Windows are important to your home’s beauty and comfort; they provide a glorious view of outside, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your indoor space. Because they are so important to a home, they see a lot of action. It’s important to keep your windows clean so that they keep functioning as they should.

Window glass can get dirty pretty fast, especially with little hands or pets in the home, but luckily glass cleaning isn’t that hard. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have features that make it easier to clean the exterior of your windows from the inside of your house, too. Looking for a simple, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors swears on:

  1. Start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that gathers on the sill and ledges will get stuck there for a long time otherwise, and cleaning it out will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Make sure not to use the same cleaning rag that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment over the side of your window screen that faces indoors. You can also use this vacuum piece to pick up any leftover dirt and dust on your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your window’s glass. You can create your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Apply your cleaner generously to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from several different directions for the best clean.
  4. Let your windows air dry after cleaning and then rinse your glass with clean water if any streaks remain.

We’ve got a few more tips, too! We recommend cleaning your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution quicker and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals prefer microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your attractive view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean all year long.
